Straw Blanket Netting

Photo: David Jenkins

I saw this straw blanket netting while hiking at Twanoh State Park. The access road had some erosion issues and straw blankets were installed to cover roadside cut slopes. This work was accomplished about 4 or 5 years ago. Notice that the straw is gone but the plastic netting remains. 100% biodegradable netting is the way to go.

Who Needs BMPs?

I found this small project in Kanab, Utah. It almost seems like someone asked, “Who needs BMPs?”

Where’s the Rock Entrance?

Photo: David Jenkins

Where’s the rock entrance? I am just glad it’s not my project. This is a small staging area for a bike path extension next to a creek. All dirty runoff ends up in the creek. There used to be a rock entrance, but with mud being tracked over it, it has disappeared. With a small staging area and rainy season work next to a creek, I would have specified that the entire staging area be covered with Asphalt Treated Base (ATB), to be removed and recycled at the end of the job. I have done this on several staging areas of up to about two acres. This can end up being much less expensive than managing tire washes and sweepers.

A Little Wind Overnight

The fence went over just like dominos. At least the compost berm stayed in place.

Plastic Netting

I saw this plastic netting today while looking at site we will be working on this summer. The straw wattle was left over from a previous project, completed almost six years ago. The straw filler is almost completely degraded. The netting is partially degraded, but in places is too strong to tear apart with my fingers. We need more 100% biodegradable best management practices and less plastic netting.

Kiddy Pool Concrete

This is the first time I have seen a contractor use a kiddy pool for concrete washout. I like how they placed plastic on the bottom so they can easily clean it out for reuse.

Just Some Old Barricades

Photo: David Jenkins

These are a bunch of old barricades used for closing off areas at an airport. Now they are made of plastic. I liked the look of all of the lights.

Rill Pattern

I stopped on the side of Highway 89, just east of Kanab, Utah, to video this rill pattern.
