Temporary Boot Wash

We were excavating a riverbank next to a former Superfund cleanup site and we hit a layer of black soil. I stopped the work and called out an Environmental Agent (EA). The EA took samples of the soil and sent them to a lab for analysis. I had the contractor rope off the area and build a temporary boot wash at the site entrance. It turned out the soil was clean.

Underground Storage Tank

Digging dirt at an old waterfront industrial site feels just like a childhood Christmas morning. You know you are going to get a present but you don’t know what it is. We found this underground storage tank partially filled with oil. After testing the contents, profiling it, and sucking it out, we removed it to be filled with carbon dioxide gas so it could be cut up, cleaned and disposed of.

Tank Farm-Final Cleanup

There is nothing quite like the smell of oil-soaked soil on a hot summer day. This was the final cleanup of a World War 2 era oil and fuel tank farm. The project involved removing the tank bottoms, piping, and dirty soil. As this is located next to the bay, ground water levels are high. Because so much of the oil and fuel had drained to the groundwater table, we also had to build a large, deep containment wall to keep the floating oil in place during the tidal displacements so that we could slowly suck it up and dispose of it.
