Small Oil Spill

I usually require a contractor to clean up a small oil spill like this. We will remove all of the soil on this project and dispose it as mildly contaminated; I let it go this time.

Portable Spill Kit

It’s always a good idea to have a bunch of portable spill kits on the job. Put one in the cab of each piece of equipment for quick response when hydraulic hoses break.

Nice job of containing the drips from hydraulic hose fittings and pump leaks using spill sausages.

Spill Pads Under Equipment

All right, so you don’t want to have to deal with petroleum contaminated soil and water; how about using spill pads under equipment?

Water Berm

I learned about water berms from a contractor several years ago. We hired them to reconstruct an old parking lot. The lot was all paved and most of it was hilly. I require extruded asphalt curbing be used to keep clean water out and dirty water inside the project. The contractor asked me if they could use water-filled berms instead. I wanted to see how they worked and agreed. They worked great so we have added this to our BMP toolbox. These are heavy PVC tubes that can be reused many times, if not abused. I can’t remember where they got these but similar ones are used in spill control. One of the suppliers I know of is: NEWPIG.COM.

Secondary Containment-Almost

Secondary containment-almost, this is better. The chainsaw bar oil and gas are together; if a spill happens, it’s in one place.

Needs Secondary Containment

Looks to me like these needs secondary containment. Any of these is a spill waiting to happen.

Kiddy Pool

The contractor placed this kiddy pool under the light plant motor and drip pan. Oil drips cause a petroleum sheen when rain water is present. The contractor will use spill pads to remove the sheen before discharging the water.
